Sudan Renews Calls for AU Membership Reinstatement

(MENAFN) Sudan's top diplomat intensified pressure Thursday on the African Union to reverse his nation's three-year membership suspension, declaring the devastating civil conflict approaching its conclusion.

Foreign Minister Muhi al-Din Salem Ahmed addressed the African Union's Peace and Security Council in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa, asserting the war has entered its final phase.

"War is not our goal and we will continue to seek peace," the minister stated in remarks carried by Sudanese media, emphasizing his government's commitment to establishing permanent stability.

Salem pointed fingers at unidentified external powers for perpetuating the bloodshed while accusing the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of illegally extracting gold from territories under their command.

In comments to a Qatar-based broadcaster, Salem framed Sudan as Africa's frontline defense against "various threats, particularly foreign armed interference."

"Ending the suspension of the Sudan's membership would benefit Africa," the minister argued, highlighting his nation's status as a founding AU member.

Sudanese diplomatic sources told the Sudan Tribune that Khartoum intends to submit a formal reinstatement petition to the Peace and Security Council Thursday.

The continental organization froze Sudan's membership in October 2021 after Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan ousted Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok's government and imposed emergency rule.

The AU stipulated that suspension would persist until civilian-led transitional governance was authentically restored.

Sudan has endured catastrophic warfare between military forces and the RSF since April 2023—a conflict that has killed tens of thousands, uprooted approximately 13 million people, and triggered one of the planet's most severe humanitarian emergencies, according to UN assessments.
